Ruins Of Public Space
The Nonument project is a new community initiative that tackles the research of monuments, buildings and public spaces in a novel way. Instead of focusing on the initial projects, the focus moves towards new context and changes experienced by these spaces in the time of their duration.

As coal mining declined in the 1960s, the significance of the Kohlebrecher Kohlgrube by Wiechels Steyr began to wane. In 1966 it finally shut down and the facilities were left to decay. After several fires in 1968, the wooden façade was destroyed. | Photo via Nonument

The third international Nonument symposium on decaying, destroyed and abandoned monuments, architecture and public space of the 20th century celebrates the release of the first book, combining possible strategies of intervention in a continually transforming contemporary city.
The first panel Nonument Spaces will be focusing on the decaying and abandoned buildings and spaces as an opportunity for their radical recontextualisation through the contributions of Miljena Vučković, Elisa Sorentino, Peter Rauch in Urška Jurman. The second panel will address the Urban Discontinuities. Spaces and buildings of socialist societies becomes relevant again through focusing on how they change because of the political transitions and exhibit signs of collective suppression. Antonia Stanev, Adam Knight, Blaž Babnik Romaniuk and Helka Dzsacsovszki will focus on the question of these political and social voids. Speakers of the third panel Public Space in Extremis, Nika Van Berkel, Antonio Grgić, Andrea Elera and Mollie Brooks will address the contemporary movement and surveillance of the public space. The evening will conclude with the keynote “Egypt” rather then “October”: Incongruences in interpreting Yugoslav national-liberation monuments, then and now. Branislav Dimitrijević will present an analysis of discursive approaches to Yugoslav socialist monumental sculpture from the time of their installment to their current popularity.
The symposium will also be the launch of our first and long awaited Nonument! Book with texts by Branislav Dimitrijević, Alexei Monroe, Nika Grabar, Ljubica Slavković, Hans von Houwelingen, Miloš Kosec and Elke Krasny. These essays offer a bird’s eye view of the vast nonumental field from all across the globe, from contextualising the fetishism of both British brutalism and Yugoslav “Spomeniks” to the influence of post-colonial discourse and laissez-faire economics of the post-1990 transition from socialism to capitalism upon the changed urban space.
The book also includes two visual essays by the Nonument Group. The outer sleeve of the book is printed with an index and a map of nonuments in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Serbia and Slovenia. This index of 120 nonuments - the nonument database, is an archive of the ongoing multidisciplinary research of twentieth-century built spaces that have undergone a shift in meaning.

Inauguration Underground Bicycle Parking Leidseplein In Amsterdam
Amsterdam, May 28th 2021 – Under the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen, one of the busiest squares in Amsterdam right next to the Leidseplein, the underground bicycle parking Leidseplein designed by the architectural studio ZJA has been inaugurated. The forty lizards of Blaauw Jan, a work of art by Hans van Houwelingen have returned to the park and watch over the bicycles in the parking.
On one hand the lizards of the work of art are integrated in the design of the bicycle parking. And on the other, the bridge over the Lijnbaansgracht, designed in the characteristic style of the Amsterdam School, is also a leading visual element in the design of the bicycle parking and its entrance.
ZJA, together with Ballast Nedam, was awarded the contract by the municipality of Amsterdam for the construction and design of the bicycle parking Leidseplein under the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen. By bringing all bicycles underground, a spatial, green square has been created above ground. This has been designed by landscape architect Ruwan Aluvihare of the municipality of Amsterdam, and provides space for visitors to the Leidseplein. Thus a renewed meeting place for the city has been created.
Erik Smits, project architect at ZJA: “Before the Leidseplein underground bicycle parking garage was built, the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen was full of bicycles. Bicycles have now been brought underground and a new place to stay has been created on the square above for visitors to walk or enjoy the sun between the bronze lizards in the park or on one of the terraces. In this way, the square has become part of the city again.”
Amsterdam School The bicycle parking has two entrances; one for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The characteristic Amsterdam School style of the bridge over the Lijnbaansgracht has been continued in the wall of the entrance to the bicycle parking. This masonry wall in warm red brick continues underground in a straight line to the entrance at the Leidseplein. The wall thus not only connects both entrances, but also connects the underground with the world above.
Light and spacious bicycle parking In the new bicycle parking, 2000 bicycles can be stored in a safe and dry manner. In the design, ZJA has given extra attention to the entry of daylight into the bicycle parking and lighting above the footpaths. What is remarkable is the wider paths and greater height (3.20 m) of the bicycle parking. This creates a light and spacious space with a transparent and pleasant atmosphere, which contributes to social safety.
Bronze lizards With the redevelopment of the Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen and the construction of the Leidseplein bicycle parking, the forty lizards of Blaauw Jan, a public work of art by Hans van Houwelingen have also returned to the park. In the grass and on the natural stone wall that continues into the entrance of the bicycle parking, forty bronze iguanas, monitor lizards and agames adorn the roof of the bicycle parking. As a nod to this, the floor of the bicycle parking is provided with lizards that guide the pedestrians to the exit on the Leidseplein.

THE ARTIST/KNIGHT

Dutch firms plan to build on their FDI in Vietnam
Vietnam has become a magnet to big Dutch firms and investors who are interested in many sectors in the country, especially through engaging in financial investment and state-owned enterprise equitisation.
During his July 9-11 visit to the Netherlands, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with many Dutch firms and investors who said the country is one of the most dynamic and fast-developing economies in Asia, with great potential for financial investment.
They expressed their wish to participate in Vietnam’s sectors of state-owned enterprise (SOE) equitisation, energy, climate change adaptation, and micro-finance.
The investors and firms include globally-famous investment equity management funds like Actiam N.V, Shell Pension, Orbit Asset Management, Pacific Spring, and Obam, as well as firms like NACO, Damen, Puma Energy, Vamed, and hundreds of others.
Arnold Bon, representative from Orbit Asset Management, said Orbit has invested in Vietnam’s financial market via VinaCapital, and will continue expanding its operations in Vietnam via co-operation with partnering organisations, individuals, and enterprises.
Tony Chan, co-founder of Pacific Spring, which specialises in supporting Asian investment funds to approach European partners, said that Pacific Spring wants to invest in Vietnam in the time to come – and like other firms, it hopes to receive support from Vietnam’s government.
Obam’s representative Erwin van Zuidam said that Obam is a long-term investor seeking well-performing firms with a sustainable business model in Vietnam, which it feels is an emerging market.
Actiam N.V’s general director Hans van Houwelingen and Shell Pension Fund’s investment consultant Jeroen Kakebeeke said their funds stand ready to pour a great deal of capital into the Vietnamese market, whose consumption and production are strongly rising.
Actiam N.V has $54.6 billion worth of assets and provides services about investment portfolio management and consultancy for individuals, organisations, and firms globally.
Meanwhile, the Shell Pension Fund, managed by Shell Group, has an asset volume of $35 billion, $27 billion of which comes from other funds from the UK, the Netherlands, and the US.
According to Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijck Asscher, Vietnam is seen by Dutch firms and investors as a “huge consumption market” with its population of 93 million people, fast-developing economy, and stable political climate.
Many other Dutch firms are also seeking to invest in projects in Vietnam.
Damen, a Netherlands-based global leader in shipbuilding, is seeking to complete its acquisition of a 70 per cent stake in Song Cam Shipbuilding JSC, the most profitable shipyard in Vietnam. The stake sale is still under governmental consideration.
Phuc asked Damen to expand its investment in Vietnam, and to soon decide on its investment in some shipbuilding firms in the country.
Puma Energy, whose asphalt factories have been operating in Vietnam for the past 20 years, already considers Vietnam a strategic market in Southeast Asia. It recently decided to participate in the equitisation of some Vietnamese SOEs, and expressed its desire to engage in that of Vietnam’s PV Oil. Phuc also suggested the firm co-operate with oil refineries in Vietnam.
NACO, one of the world’s leading airport consultancies, also wants to seek business opportunities in Vietnam, where a number of large airports are being developed.
Currently NACO is co-operating with Vietnam Aviation Agency by providing consulting on the upgrade and construction of new airports in the country. NACO particularly wishes to co-operate with the government to deploy an airport-based city model in Vietnam.
In calling upon Dutch firms to invest in Vietnam, the PM stressed, “Vietnam is creating the best conditions for all foreign private investment funds.”
He said that now is the best time for the Dutch to invest in Vietnam, where the stock and financial markets are flourishing. Many SOEs have and will be radically equitised, including big groups operating in the sectors of transport, airports, expressways, seaports, electricity, telecommunications, agriculture, and tourism. Vietnam has committed to removing barriers in many sectors, especially telecommunications, finance, and banking, whose foreign ownership limits have been and will continue to be lifted.
During Phuc’s visit to the Netherlands, 11 co-operation deals worth about $700 million were inked by enterprises from both nations. For example, Vinalines and Holland’s STC Group clinched a deal on training co-operation, while Xuan Thanh Group and BS Bull signed a co-operative agreement on climate change consultancy, agriculture, and renewable energy development.
As of June 20, 2017, the Dutch had 292 valid investment projects in Vietnam, registered at $7.97 billion, according to Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment. (Vietnam Investment Review – July 17)
